Meet Up & Eat Up in Kalamazoo County
July 11, 2017, Kalamazoo, MI: Free breakfast, lunch and snacks will be served throughout the summer in Kalamazoo County for children 18 years and younger at various locations. Provided by The Meet Up and Eat Up Summer Food Service Program, meals and snacks will be available at 48 different locations in Kalamazoo County. Students up to 26 years old who are enrolled in a school for physical or mental disabilities can also participate free of charge. Adults accompanying kids and students can enjoy the meals for $2 per meal.
No paperwork or ID is requested or needed. All kids " local or visiting from other communities " are welcome at any site. Many of the 2017 Meet Up and Eat Up sites include free games or activities for kids.
Most sites are open Monday through Friday, while a few are closed on Fridays. The Meet Up and Eat Up program will continue throughout the summer until mid-August. Up to two meals are served every day. All times of meal service are specific to each site. Every site offers meals for lunch between the hours of 10:30 to 1:30pm.
The primary purpose of the program is to bridge the gap in summer time, to help families ensure their children are getting nutritious meals and snacks, says this year s spokesperson, Susan Livingston, who is from the Portage Public School system. Last year, this program provided over 100,000 meals and snacks, throughout the summer. Those numbers are evidence of the fundamental needs this program is meeting. It s very important that our families with children are aware that this service is available to them, for most of the summer.
The program is a service of HUNGER FREE COMMUNITY COALITION, made up Food & Nutrition Services staff of participating school districts collaborate year-round to plan summer meals at strategic locations throughout Kalamazoo County. School district sponsors of the Meet Up & Eat Up program in Kalamazoo County include:
