The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo recently received a grant in the amount of $33,000 to support Healthy Corner Stores " an effort involving multiple YMCAs statewide to connect small-scale growers and distributors with urban grocers and retailers to increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables to families in Kalamazoo.

Healthy Corner Stores was created by the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, which administers the grant funding provided by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.

The goal of Healthy Corner Stores is to bring healthier and more affordable food options to communities that often have limited fresh options by making local produce more readily available and accessible at convenient locations.

Many corner stores and ethnic groceries in the Kalamazoo area struggle to find distributors willing to deliver small quantities of fresh produce. Through the Healthy Corner Stores initiative, the Y is filling this need as part of its commitment to reforming our local food system, working collaboratively with small scale growers, educating corner store owners about the benefits of selling more fruits and veggies, and educating the community about the benefits of eating nutrient rich food.

Stay tuned for more information coming soon about YMCA Healthy Corner Stores!
