The YMCA at Portage is extending shower and locker room access to those families and individuals who have been displaced or otherwise affected by the devasting tornados that hit its community. People do not have to be Y members. Photo I.D. is required for facility access.

The Portage Y is located at 2900 W. Centre Ave in Portage.

The Portage Y was closed for two days as a result of multiple tornados that hit on Tuesday, May 7, because it lost power and needed time to clear fallen trees and accumulated debris on its property. Having sustained very minor building damage, it re-opened on Thursday, May 9, and announced its re-opening to include that it was making its showers available to those who needed them.

“We want the Y to be a safe place for those who need support. This is one way we can help our neighbors whose lives have been turned upside down because of the storms,” said Dave Morgan, YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo CEO.

The Y at Portage, part of The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo, is a non-profit organization. Its focus is YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING, and SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.  With multiple facilities in Greater Kalamazoo, the Y Movement is a national movement that provides programs to strengthen Body, Mind, and Spirit FOR ALL.
