A Message from the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo
A recent staff termination has led to a social media firestorm that we feel compelled to address to protect the reputation of the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo and its commitment to the Greater Kalamazoo community at large and, specifically, to our staff, members, participants, and guests.
For 160 years, the Y has been a cornerstone of this community, working to fulfill a modern promise: to be 'For All.' We hear the disappointment, anger, and the questions being shared right now. We recognize that for many, our recent silence on human rights initiatives—and the limited information we can share regarding a recent personnel change—has felt like a contradiction of the core values we claim to uphold.
While we are legally and ethically bound to maintain the confidentiality of HR matters, we want to be remarkably clear: Our legal inability to discuss an individual case is not a lack of commitment to our convictions. We understand that our initial response left a gap that led many to question our stance on the fundamental rights of our neighbors. Our work—including our dedicated programs that provide long-term sanctuary and free access for refugees—is a testament to our commitment to fairness, representation, and the active pursuit of social justice.
We are listening, we are reflecting on our role in these vital community conversations, and we remain unequivocally dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive space that honors the dignity of every person we serve. We thank you for holding us to the high standard this community deserves.
