The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo is making a major investment in the Portage Y, a roof replacement over the gym and tennis program areas. The affected area is about 70% of the complete roofing system at Portage, representing the original roofs of the facility when it was built in the mid 1974. This is an important first step to preparing for future renovations.

What are the issues with the roof?
The roofing system has exceeded its functional lifespan and is showing significant signs of deterioration. Existing patch repairs are failing and are no longer a viable long-term solution. To mitigate the risk of extensive (and costly) structural water damage, a full replacement is required immediately.

Why now?
We want to be proactive in addressing the condition before it leads to operational disruptions or more costly repairs. Timing also aligns with our broader facility improvement priorities as we prepare for major building renovations.

What is the cost?

The total project cost is approximately $1.6 million which reflects both materials and labor associated with completing the roof replacement.

How is this being funded?

The project is being funded through a combination of capital reserves and planned facility investment funds.

What is the impact to program and building access?
There will be some temporary impacts to access and parking during the work, as well as minor noise associated with construction activities.

How long will the impact last?
The project is expected to take approximately 30 days with intermittent disruptions during that time.
