YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo Launches Free Summer Meal Program for Local Youth
Kalamazoo, MI – June 15, 2026 – The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo is proud to announce the return of its free summer meal program for local families. Through the State of Michigan’s Rural Non-Congregate Meal Service program, the Y is expanding its reach for Summer 2026 by adding a second weekly distribution site.
Beginning the week of June 22, children 18 years of age and under can receive a weekly bundle of seven healthy breakfasts and seven healthy lunches. These bundles ensure area youth have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer months, helping to combat seasonal food insecurity.
Parents and legal guardians are welcome to pick up meals for their children, even if the children are not present. Bundles are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT PICKUP:
We want to make the pickup process as quick and convenient as possible for busy families:
- Look for the Y food van
- Stay In Your Vehicle: There is no need to get out of your car at all.
- Simple Drive-Thru Process: A drive-thru line will be available for easy loading. When you pull up, friendly Y staff members will simply ask you how many youth you are picking up meals for.
- Contactless Loading: Staff will gladly load the food bags and milk gallons directly into your trunk or open vehicle window.
MEETING A CRITICAL NEED IN THE COMMUNITY:
"Offering this program builds on our strong legacy of providing meals to our community," shares Bobby Ludwick, VP of Youth Services and Grants. "For us, Youth Development starts with meeting basic needs. Providing healthy meals helps ensure kids are getting what they need to thrive, while giving peace of mind to parents and guardians. Offering a second location for summer 2026 will allow us to double our distribution efforts on the east side of the county."
This expansion aligns directly with the Y's "1 in 1 by 31" strategic vision, which aims to bring a Y program within one mile of every resident in the service area by 2031.
The need for non-congregate distribution in these specific pockets of the county is clear and consistent. During the program's inaugural year in 2025, the Y provided 11,732 meals—including over 838 gallons of milk—to families on the west side of Kalamazoo County. Demand was so high that all available food bundles were typically claimed within the first half-hour of distribution each week.
A LEGACY OF FIGHTING HUNGER:
The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo has a long-standing commitment to food security. For the past six summers, the Y served as a traditional Congregate Meal Site, offering free lunches in a social setting through the State of Michigan’s Meet Up & Eat Up program. This outreach is vital in preventing the "summer slide"—the learning loss that often impacts children in low-income areas where families rely heavily on free or reduced-price school meals.

Beyond annual summer programming, the Y has historically pivoted to meet crisis-level needs, such as distributing over 137,340 emergency meals to local families during the COVID-19 lockdown.
